Reactions of Alkenes Alkenes (Olefins) are the unsaturated hydrocarbon that possess double bonds that make them have a particular reaction. The reaction of alkene is determined by its functional group which is the carbon-carbon double bond. Unlike alkanes (see alkanes on left), alkenes participate in addition reaction and not substitution reaction. Alkenes also undergo combustion reaction. Alkenes are important to our everyday life as it is the precursors of many materials that we utilize in our recreational activities. These materials are among the following: alcohols, polymers and many others.
